Liberation Psychology Themed Conferences in 2014

Comrades,

I’m on the hunt for liberation psychology themed conferences in 2014. I’m embarrassed to say I only speak English. Like others, I’m keen on conferences that focus on how psychology can catalyze social action. I continue to be fascinated and disturbed by how we overlook others’ suffering particularly when we are in the face of it. So, I’m also looking for the opportunity to air my research on bystanding and deepen my understanding of its layers through dialogues.

Any suggestions will be more than welcome.

Naples: European Conference of Community Psychology – 7th-9th November 2013

If any members are going to this conference it will be an opportunity to meet up.  I know some of us will be there.  This time we haven’t scheduled any network events, but we can meet informally – certainly I’d appreciate thoughts on how to make the network more …. active.

International congress of psychology, 2012: a libpsy presence?

Hi everyone,

As ICP ( http://www.icp2012.com) approaches, I thought it might be a good idea to see if we can arrange for a Liberation Psychology gathering in Cape Town.

If there is sufficient interest, we can try finding a good time slot and, of course, a place to meet.

We need to act quickly. Therefore I’d appreciate your quick response.

Please respond to me at serdardegirmencioglu AT gmail.com

Warm regards from hot and steamy Istanbul,

Serdar M. Degirmencioglu

libpsy.org in action

Some photos from the International Community Psychology Conference in Barcelona last week.  More on this to follow.

Barcelona: Liberation Psychology Round Table
This is the Round Table, Psychology for Liberation: Contemporary Currents, the first event organised by the English Language Liberation Psychology Network, http://libpsy.org/ Left to Right are Catalina Argüello (Costa Rica, Colombia, Spain), Taiwo Afuape (UK), Ger Moane (Ireland), Mark Burton (UK) and Serdar Degirmencioglu (Turkey). If you were there, then please do comment.

There was quite alot of interst in our events with good audience contributions.

Liberation Psychology Network banner – first unfurling.
This fine banner was made by Alejandro Gortazar and María Castro. Thanks to Steve Melluish for bringing it to Barcelona. It got a lot of interest both from people new to LP and those already well acquainted.
In the photo are Cezar Góis (who uses Martín-Baró’s ideas in his work), from Fortaleza Brazil (where the next CP International Congress will be) and me, Mark Burton from Manchester, UK.

We put the banner up in the entrance hall for the large symposia where it couldn’t be missed. Thanks to our Peruvian colleagues for help erecting it!

From the participative workshop where we explored the ideas of liberation psychology, making a visual display of their interrelationships – we’ll post the results of this here later.
